Betteridge's Law of Headlines

Any headline that ends with a question mark can be answered by 'no'.

Betteridge's point was about editorial practice: if the reporting supported the claim, the headline would assert it. The question mark marks an absence of evidence.

In practice

  • "Is this the end of the office?" was published in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
  • A headline asking whether a common food causes cancer is reporting a study that found it might not.
