Expertise Reversal Effect

Also called The expertise reversal

Instructional support that helps a novice hinders an expert, so the method must change as competence grows.

The scaffolding that carries a beginner becomes redundant material the expert must process and discard, which costs more than it gives. It is the reason a single best teaching method cannot exist: the correct method is a function of where the learner already is.

In practice

  • A checklist that halves errors for new staff slows the experienced ones and they stop using it.
  • A manual written for beginners is unusable by the people who need the reference.
