Hemphill's Law

The more urgent the need for decision, the less apparent become the consequences of that decision.

From the Murphy's law canon. It is the practical companion to the fog of war: urgency compresses the time available to think exactly when the consequences are largest.

In practice

  • A director asked for a decision by close of business chooses the option that can be explained fastest, not the one that survives a year.
  • A team forced to pick a vendor in a week picks the one with the best-prepared answers, which is a different quality from the best vendor.
