Induced Demand

Also called Lewis–Mogridge position

Increasing supply of a resource induces additional demand for that resource.

Downs and others. Adding a lane fills the lane: Houston's Katy Freeway reconstruction, completed in 2008, gave six general-purpose lanes in each direction plus two managed lanes, and commute times rose. Popular 26-lane counts include frontage and other lanes at the widest cross-section, and the project illustrates the mechanism rather than proving it alone.

In practice

  • A team given a second on-call engineer finds the alert volume rises to fill both.
