Objects moving together are perceived as a group.
Wertheimer's 1923 principle. It is the strongest of the grouping cues: a flock of birds is perceived as one object because the elements share a motion vector.
In practice
- Twelve dots that move together are one object; the same dots moving independently are twelve.
- A crowd crossing a road as a mass reads as one thing; the person who stops is instantly separate.
