Law of the Instrument (Maslow's Hammer)

Also called Maslow's Hammer; golden hammer

If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Kaplan stated it in 1964 and Maslow in 1966. The organisational version is more costly: a firm with a consulting arm finds every problem needs consulting, and believes it.

In practice

  • A firm with a strong data science team frames a cultural problem as a measurement problem and builds a dashboard.
  • A litigator asked to resolve a family dispute produces a settlement agreement, which is what they have.
