Muphry's Law

If you write anything criticizing editing or proofreading, there will be a fault in what you've written.

Bangsund's 1992 coinage, deliberately misspelling Murphy. It survives because it is reliably true, which is why editors are the least surprised people in publishing.

In practice

  • A style guide's section on avoiding typos contains one.
  • A memo criticising sloppy analysis contains an arithmetic error, which the recipients notice first.
Standing
Deliberate misspelling of Murphy.
