Streisand Effect

Attempts to hide or censor information have the unintended consequence of publicizing it more widely.

Named for Streisand's 2003 attempt to suppress an aerial photograph of her house, which had been downloaded six times before the lawsuit and hundreds of thousands afterward.

In practice

  • A council that removes a critical leaflet from a noticeboard finds it photographed and circulating in three local groups by evening.
  • A company that issues a takedown notice over a critical blog post creates the audience the post never had.
