Zuckerberg's Law

The amount of content people share doubles every year.

A 2008 growth claim rather than a durable regularity. Sharing volume did rise sharply and did not sustain annual doubling, and the metric was never defined precisely enough to test.

In practice

  • A platform reports sharing volume doubling in its second year and is still quoting the trend to investors in its fifth, when growth has flattened.
  • A team asked to verify the doubling finds that reposts, replies and photo uploads were counted differently in each of the three years.
