Engelbart's Augmentation Principle

Also called Augmenting human intellect

Build tools that raise human capability in partnership with the person rather than tools that replace them.

Engelbart's 1968 demonstration introduced the mouse, hypertext, video conferencing and collaborative editing in ninety minutes. His framing was augmentation, and the field largely pursued automation instead.

In practice

  • A radiology tool that flags candidate regions for a doctor to review outperforms both the doctor alone and the tool alone.
  • A translation workflow where the machine drafts and the human edits produces better output than either working unaided.
