Moravec's Paradox

What is easy for humans is hard for machines and what is hard for humans is easy for machines.

Moravec's 1988 observation: a computer can play grandmaster chess and cannot pick up a cup. A billion years of evolution went into perception and movement, and a few thousand into abstract reasoning.

In practice

  • A machine that beats any human at chess cannot fold a towel.
  • A system that summarises a legal document flawlessly cannot reliably tell whether the office kitchen is tidy.
