Gell-Mann Amnesia

Also called Gell-Mann amnesia effect

Trusting media in domains you don't know, despite seeing errors in domains you do.

Crichton's term: you read an article on your own field, see it is wrong, turn the page, and resume trusting the paper on subjects you cannot check. The amnesia is between paragraphs.

In practice

  • A doctor reads a health article about their own specialism, sees three errors, and reads the economics page without adjusting.
  • An engineer who knows the coverage of their own field is wrong still forms a view on foreign policy from the same outlet.
