Gilmore's Law

The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it.

Gilmore's 1993 remark about Usenet. It has aged unevenly: it holds well against technical blocking and poorly against platform-level moderation, which is not damage the network can route around.

In practice

  • A document blocked by a national firewall is mirrored across four hosting providers before the block is fully deployed.
  • An application removed from both mobile stores has nowhere to be mirrored to, and the users who wanted it never learn it existed.
