Kidder's Law

Responsibility always exceeds authority.

From the Murphy's law canon, and the most common structural complaint in organisations. The gap between the two is where burnout and blame both accumulate.

In practice

  • A project manager is accountable for a delivery date and cannot direct any of the four teams that determine it.
  • A parent is responsible for a child's attendance and has no authority over the bus timetable that determines it.
