Law of Diminishing Cohesion

As groups grow, internal cohesion weakens.

Unattributed. The mechanism is real and appears in Dunbar's layers and in span-of-control research, but no one has stated it as a testable law.

In practice

  • A village hall committee of six that ran the fĂȘte for years cannot agree a date once it has grown to twenty-two.
  • A working group of eight makes decisions in the room; the same group at thirty makes them in a subcommittee, and the thirty stop attending.
