Silver Rule

Do not do to others what you would not want done to you; the negative formulation demands less and assumes less.

Hillel gave it standing on one foot to a questioner asking for the whole Torah. The negative formulation demands less and assumes less about whether your preferences match the other person's.

In practice

  • A neighbour who does not run the mower at seven in the morning has done the whole of what is required, without guessing what the household next door enjoys.
  • It demands less and assumes less than the golden rule: not imposing what you would hate requires no theory of what the other person wants.
