Sunflower Management

Also called HiPPO effect

Managers who orient toward power rather than toward mission.

Management folklore. Sunflowers turn to face the sun, and the reporting consequence is watermelon status: everyone reflects the boss's preferred view back at them.

In practice

  • A director mentions in passing that she favours the second option, and all four workstream papers recommend the second option.
  • A management team where every report reflects the chief executive's stated preference has no information about anything except that preference.
Standing
The Japanese term sontaku names the same behaviour from the subordinate's side, where no instruction is ever given.
